What I have learnt about money
They say money makes the world go around, and it’s true really. All you need to do is to look at what happened in the Global Financial Crisis of a few years back when economies were crumbling. I was working in a financial institution at the time and it was pretty rough going. Uncertainty and fear over jobs, the unknown of what was going to happen to our own economy.
So sure money makes the world go around – taxes, income, etc. etc. but there is more to it. You don’t have to be rich or greedy or materialistic to be concerned with the flow of money into your bank account! Over the past couple of years I have come to realise that the way you think about money, how you give and receive money and, importantly, set a good money example for your kids, is so important. This whole change came about when I signed up for Denise Duffield-Thomas’ Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp*. Don’t be put off by the name – for years Denise had been called a lucky bitch by her friends because good things just seemed to happen to her. So she owned it and the rest is history, and a damn good course!
To say that the Bootcamp was transformational for me is an understatement. Not in just how I think about money but in other areas of my life as well. Here are just a few of the key learnings I took from the course.
Probably the biggest game changer for me has been what I have learnt about manifestation. It may sound a bit “woo woo” but really this is powerful stuff. Call it “The Secret” or the power of positive thinking or whatever you like. When it comes down to it, manifestation is all about being 100% focussed on a goal, putting it out there and working your way towards it. It isn’t about asking for something and sitting back until it arrives on your door step. Where is the fun in that? Denise is currently running a free manifesting course* if this is something you are interested in learning more about.
Just like you have memories of events in your life that shape how you respond in different situations, you will also have memories of money that will shape how you respond to money situations that arise. It could be the schoolyard bully who took your lunch money everyday or forgetting your lunch and having to borrow money from a friend who piled guilt on you for asking. It could be losing your wallet or being robbed or growing up in a family where you could never afford the things you wanted. All of these things, whether you realise it or not, shape the relationship you have with money as an adult. In the bootcamp, Denise teaches practical ways to understand these memories, deal with them and move on to a healthier relationship with money.
We all have money baggage
You know how I talked above about money memories and how they shape us today? Well, everybody has these memories. When you start going through Denise’s program, you start to notice the things other people around you say about money. We all have baggage and sometimes your baggage will be linked to those other people, particulalry close family and friends. Understanding that we all have baggage is really important to know that you are not alone. If money makes you feel “icky” there is a reason why and you aren’t the only one. Just remember that other people’s money issues aren’t your own!
It is amazing what can happen when you transform your mindset in any aspect of your life. A positive, open mindset will take you a long way to achieving your goals, whether they be fitness, health, lifestyle, parenting or money goals. Having an abundance mindset is one of the key things Denise talks about in her course and one that I have adopted myself. An abundance mindset, as opposed to a scarcity mindset, is one where you believe that there are always new opportunities available. The “when one door closes, another one opens” type mentality. Opportunities are ripe for the picking and you just have to be open to them to welcome them into your life.
The Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp* is most suited to female entrepreneurs so all you mumpreneurs who are out there hustling to grow your business and provide for your family, this is for you. For everyone else, a little money mindset transformation never hurts! Especially when you are trying to raise kids with healthy money habits and memories. In November, for the first time in three years, Denise will be running a live round of the bootcamp. You can sign up as an early bird before 27 October to save $500 on the enrolment fee. Payment plan also available.
