Wrapping is a useful method to help babies settle and sleep on their back. Scientific studies have shown that wrapping can have a calming, sleep-promoting effect on young babies. Wrapping can promote more sustained sleep and reduce the frequency of spontaneous awakening.
Before wrapping your baby, consider their stage of development. Leave arms free once the startle reflex disappears around three months. Most babies eventually resist being wrapped. It is essential to discontinue wrapping as soon as your baby starts showing signs that they can begin to roll, usually between four to six months. The wrap may prevent an older baby who has turned onto their tummy during sleep from returning to the back-sleeping position.
Follow these easy steps:
Place your baby off-centre (to left or right) with top of wrap level with shoulders.
Fold your baby’s arms across their chest and bring the shorter side of the wrap across their arms and tuck firmly under their body.
Bring the larger side of the wrap across and tuck under.
Bring the bottom of the wrap on top of the baby
Fold the bottom of the wrap under your baby
Sleep your baby on their back with their head and face uncovered.
