Last month Tefal sent me a Cuisine Companion to use while I am renovating my house. We are without a kitchen for 8 weeks and the Cuisine Companion is it. No oven, no cooktop, no saucepans and no fry pans. While I have missed baking and roasting, we have been eating quite well. It does take a bit more planning and co-ordination but it can be done.
The thing I love about the Cuisine Companion is that I can make a healthy meal with minimal effort, mess and clean up. This one pot penne bolognaise is one dish I have made a number of times over the last month. As I don’t have a cooktop, if we want to eat pasta it has to be cooked in the Cuisine Companion. To save time I have added it into the bolognaise to cook together. It does result in a starchier sauce and not as rich as a traditional bolognaise but my Italian husband hasn’t made any complaints.
One pot penne bolognaise
1 onion, peeled and roughly chopped
2 cloves of garlic, peeled and roughly chopped
2 1/2 tbsp rice bran oil (or olive oil)
500g beef mince
400g tin crushed tomatoes
140g tub tomato paste
1 medium carrot, grated
2 cups vegetable stock
3 tbsp chopped parsley
2 tbsp chopped basil
pinch salt and pepper
1 tsp sugar
200g penne pasta
Place the onion and garlic in the bowl of the Cuisine Companion with the Ultrablade on speed 11 for 10-15 seconds.
Scrape down the sides with the silicone spatula. Replace the Ultrablade with the Stirrer. Add the oil and set to slow cook P1 at 130°C for 5 minutes.
Add the mince to the bowl and break it up with the silicone spatula. Again set to the slow cook P1 at 130°C for 5 minutes. When cooking is complete once again break up the mince with the silicone spatula to remove any large chunks.
Add the remaining ingredients, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, carrot, stock, parsley, basil, salt, pepper, sugar and pasta. Stir to combine. Set to slow cook P2 at 95°C for 25 minutes.
Remember that the pasta will keep cooking once the program is finished so to avoid overcooking the pasta make sure you serve it out immediately.
Serve with grated parmesan cheese.
