Lara Beesley is a mum of two with a third on the way. She is an event stylist and runs the gorgeous Honey Lane. I was lucky enough to have Lara style my baby shower while I was pregnant and have been following her ever since. She has an eye for style that clearly extends beyond events to her personal style. I was so thrilled to photograph Lara and share a little of her style with you.
I absolutely love being pregnant and yes I love dressing for pregnancy. My first pregnancy was over winter and for me it was a little harder styling the bump during winter especially during the coldest days when coast and jackets were a necessity! My second and third pregnancies have been in summer and it’s a lot easier to thrown on a maxi or denim shorts with a singlet.
Overall my style is a little edgy whilst still being feminine. Corporate attire doesn’t’ really excite me so I am lucky that my work allows me to keep it pretty casual on a daily basis! I definitely shop WAY less for myself now that I have two little ones. It’s is fun buying for them that I have definitely gone to the bottom of the priority list! Of course, my style and choice of clothes has definitely evolved since being in my 20s…but that’s more about dressing for my age rather than because I am a mum.
I have got to say I would live in gym gear if I could! So for those mid-week days I am home with the kids and we don’t have any special engagements, then gym gear it is! It’s comfy, options for all weather and sneakers are the best for running around after toddlers!
90% of the time, it’s got to be comfort, without completely sacrificing style though! Being an event stylist means I can be meeting with lovely clients in the morning, and then cleaning out a warehouse in the afternoon! Style and comfort have to meet somewhere there. However of course there are times when style is priority especially when attending special events.
There is a gorgeous boutique in Freshwater called Splice, which is definitely a go to for me when something amazing is required! Although it’s not exactly pregnant friendly and since I seem to always be pregnant, Kookai is a trusty label for fitted dresses when you are comfortable flaunting the bump. I can’t say I am a lover of any maternity brands specifically however I did raid the maternity section of H&M when I was in London late last year. They had some great, comfy pieces that didn’t scream maternity wear!
If I regret anything it would probably be sending ridiculous amounts of money on dresses in my late 20s every time there was a wedding, hens party, or other special occasion. I now know that I could have probably spent half as much as I did per dress and been just as happy with the way I looked!
My advice to other mums is to nurture yourself!!! Make sure your cup is full otherwise you cannot adequately look after the ones you love! I know it’s easier said than done at times but I am at my happiest when I have exercised properly for the week and have fit in at least one yoga class…less than I would like but it’s better than nothing! And when I am happy I can be a better, more present mum!
