As you pack away the Christmas decorations, think twice before you throw your old Christmas cards in the bin. It seems it will be a while before the digital age catches up with the giving and receiving of cards at Christmas so save yourself some money and reuse your old cards.

This is the perfect activity for the kids to get involved in and is a great school holiday activity. Save it for a rainy day or when you are looking for something to keep the kids busy for a while. All you need is a pair of scissors and if you have paper punches those will come in hand also.

Have the kids lay all the cards on a table and then scan the cards and then sort the cards into two piles. One pile you will make gift tags from and the other pile you will be making cut outs for a Christmas craft box.

Gift tags – look for large Santa/reindeer/bauble etc. shapes large enough to write on the back for a gift tag next year. Cut around the shape, punch a hole in the top and file away for use at Christmas next year.

Christmas cut outs – if you have a paper punch this is where it will come in handy as you can quickly punch shapes out of the card. If you don’t have a punch just cut around smaller shapes and words on the cards. Look for pretty patterns and small presents and Christmas characters. These can be used next year to glue onto blank cards, wrapping paper or any other type of Christmas craft the kids get into.

So start the year with some savings, put a grin on your inner environmentalist and have some fun with the kids at the same time.

Do you have other uses for old Christmas cards?
