It’s tempting in winter to just pop your footsies in a pair of socks and forget they exist. But if you don’t look after your feet in winter, they end up all dry and scaly and you are one step behind for fabulous summer feet. And if you don’t look after your feet in summer then what are you thinking?

With these foot care tips you should be on your way to beautiful feet without the salon pedicure price tags. These are all things you can do at home when the kids have gone to bed. Plus a few of my favourite products that I use on my feet.

Get rid of dry skin

Dry skin on my feet is one of the things I really detest the most. It just feels icky. There are a couple of products I use to combat this.

The first is Milky Foot*. I’m going to give you fair warning straight up here that using Milky Foot is not pretty. It starts out fine. You pop the little socks on and sit for an hour while it does it’s magic and then you wash it all away. After about 3 days you will be asking yourself, “did it even work?”. But then the fun starts.

Just as you are about to write off Milky Foot forever, the dead skin on your feet will start peeling away in rather large pieces. If your feet are exposed in public, people will ask you if your feet are ok. Your partner may even decide to sleep in another bedroom. And I would advise wearing socks around the house unless you want to be vacuuming your dead skin shreds for the carpet. Look, I told you it wasn’t pretty.

But, the result is so worth it. About two weeks later you will have the softest, dead-skin-free feet in town. Make sure you don’t do a Milky Foot just before a big event. Big mistake! repeat about 3-4 times a year and you will be laughing.

The other product I use is the Scholl Velvet Smooth Electronic Foot File*. You would have seen the ads for it on TV. It doesn’t have quite the same effect as Milky Foot but it does do  a great job at smoothing over any dry skin on the soles of your feet. Because it is electronic, there is no scrubbing to do, just run it over your feet. In fact, if you push too hard it will affect the operation.

Moisturise

Moisturising your feet is one way to prevent dead and dry skin. But it also helps leave your feet feeling and looking extra soft, which is especially important in summer when you are trotting about in those beautiful sandals. It’s best to moisturise your feet at night when you climb into bed so you don’t spread the cream throughout the house.

My absolute favourite moisturiser to use on my feet is Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Concentrated Cream*. I will lather this on my feet at night before bed and then usually pop on a pair of socks. It does such an amazing job of moisturising your feet and softening the skin. Plus I love the smell! Coconut oil is also a great natural moisturiser and you can do the same as above with popping some on at night before bed to work it’s magic.

Make them pretty

It’s amazing what a little colour can do to make your feet look even more gorgeous.

Jamberry nail wraps are a good solution for a longer lasting pedicure. They do take a bit longer than just painting your nails but the designs and longevity are worth it if you can set the time aside. Keep your wraps up high or your kids might find them and stick them all over the furniture like mine did!

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel* is another product with a longer lifespan. Apply the Miracle Gel colour and then the top coat for an at home gel finish without the UV lights.

Banish bad smells

Taking care of your feet should limit smells but sometimes they persist. A product I have been using lately is Probiotics Solutions Fresh Feet and it really does work. It is all natural and all organic in a handy spray bottle. I also spray it in my kids gumboots and it works like magic!

If you want a household solution, bicarb soda is it. Sprinkle it in your shoes and leave overnight. But make sure you tip it out before you wear the shoes again.
