The Sydney Royal Easter Show is always a school holiday winner and always a fabulous day out with the kids. I love everything about the show – the sights, the sounds, even the smells, but these are the five things I think you really must do at the show this year.

Try the fresh produce

Every year, the highlight of the show for me is the District Exhibits in the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome. To see all that beautiful produce that our farmers grow is phenomenal. The effort that must go into the displays just blows my mind. This year the displays did not disappoint. Get down and chat to the farmers. Buy some of the produce and try it out. I purchased an apple from the Woolworths Food Farm (on the Animal Walk) and it was so sweet and crisp. Delicious! We are so blessed in this country to have some of the finest produce in the world.

Get up close with the animals

For us city dwellers, it isn’t every day that you can get up close with the animals aside from a petting zoo at the markets or a trip to the zoo. The Animal Walk is always the first stop on our day at the show. Patting chicks, seeing a horseshoe being replaced, learning about the milking process for cows or actually feeding the animals in the Farmyard Nursery. These are all experiences that you don’t often get. What better place to learn about animals and farming than from the best in the business in NSW?

Visit the carnival after dark

When the sun goes down, the carnival transforms. It comes alive. I went to the show with my mum and dad so when they found their seats at the stadium to start watching the evening entertainment, Miss 3 and I hit were off. We went on the double decker carousel, rode the mini train and played the laughing clowns. I managed to win the top prize on the laughing clowns which was apparently Little Miss’ highlight of the day.

Eat afternoon tea at the CWA Tearoom

Head to the Home, Garden and Lifestyle Pavilion at some point during the day and treat yourself to tea and CWA scones. Try stopping at one, I dare you! Even better if you can get the kids asleep in the pram like I did. It was the perfect pit stop to recharge the batteries and try and the most delicious scones I’ve ever eaten.

Chat to a volunteer

I had to feed my baby so I went to sit down outside outside the sheep pavillion. I watched as one of the volunteers, Ivan, decked out in the most glorious animal covered hat I have ever seen, stopping every parent that walked past to make sure they had a passports for their kids. He didn’t want a single child to miss out and he looked almost heartbroken when a parent didn’t stop. The show is full of wonderful volunteers like Ivan. Stop and have a chat to one to say thank you for the role they play in making the event what it is.

Other highlights

Showbags are always a favourite! My top picks for value this year are the Trolls, Shopkins, My Little Pony, Mister Maker, Teletubbies and Unicorn bags. Sukin is my pick for mum with four full size products plus a 20% off discount voucher all for under $30.

Lasgna on a stick. I wasn’t brave enough to try it, but it’s one of those things that you will only find at the show. Each year it seems to get crazier! Let me know if you tried it!!

We took the bus there and it was so easy. The driver hopped off to help me put the pram in the back of the bus and helped me off with it when we arrived. Coming home we didn’t even have to wait for a bus and were able to jump straight on. Depending on where you live, it is a really great service and the cost is included in the ShowLink ticket prices.

But nothing beats the feeling you get when you finally put your feet up at the end of the day. Arms and legs aching from carrying kids and bags all day but your heart full and happy from all the memories of the day, like being asked 100 times if they can get their face painted before you finally crack just to enjoy at least one whinge free minute…
