I just want to clear a few things up. With my extensive research* on the matter it appears that there are some misconceptions out there about motherhood. Let me clear a few of them up for you. (*extensive research=my opinion)

“Dinner time is a cinch. I just carry the baby in my arms while I prepare our three course meal”, said no mum ever.

“Sunday sleep ins with toddlers are my favourite. We all stay in bed cuddling and the kids love to opportunity to rest at the end of a big week”, said no mum ever.

“I always like to make my phone calls around my kids. The sound of me talking on the phone gives them a sense of security while they happily play independently”, said no mum ever.

Motherhood isn’t about the perfection that we see in the stock images splashed across advertising and magazines. Real motherhood is, at times, chaotic, messy (oh the mess!), stressful and overwhelming. But at the same time it is amazing, beautiful, powerful and the most fulfilling job in the world.

So with this in mind, I’m calling death to the white couch stock images. You know the ones where the mum is feeding the baby sweet potato on the white couch. Because that was a good idea…

I have been guilty of using the fake perfect mum stock images (white couch included), but no more. To celebrate the beauty of real motherhood this Mother’s Day I worked with Elise Garner (www.lecoco.com.au) and some gorgeous mums to create a series of photos that celebrate the beauty of what is everyday motherhood. Cooking dinner, working out, getting ready, sleeping and working are all things we manage to do everyday, somehow in amongst the chaos. And we do it with a smile (most of the time) and go back again the next day and the next to do it all over again.

The images are beautiful. They capture those perfect little moments of happy chaos that we all experience and know. Because in my opinion, that’s what life is all about.
